HALF DEAD IN A TANNING BED was an exhibition in collaboration with MADEME’s relaunch at Company Gallery in NYC. Inspired by found images archived on the internet of womens beauty rituals, there was a particular fascination with the tanning bed. When viewed from within, the bed itself becomes a kind of world or womb, enveloping the body in its warmth and glow. On the other hand, there’s also a tomb-like quality to the tanning bed. I liked this image of a pale, fragile body surrendering itself to these claustrophobic walls to emerge again, more tan and confident than before. A rebirth of sorts.
